The Brewers Soup Collective is a non-profit company (NPC) consisting of breweries in South Africa who are repurposing their brewery equipment to produce food for our most vulnerable communities.
Breweries nationwide were sitting idle due to severe, prohibition style laws as part of the Covid-19 government response. A group of innovative brewers, saw the potential to address the rapidly growing humanitarian hunger crisis. Our mash tuns, usually used to make beer, are the ideal vessels to make large quantities of soup.
Pallets of vegetables are sourced directly from the market at the best daily rates. At the brewery a team of dedicated volunteers prepare the vegetables in multiple daily shifts. Product development is ongoing, overseen by qualified nutritionists, head chefs and of course South Africa’s amazing craft brewers.
An average craft brewery, is capable of brewing 10,000 portions of nutritious soup per day.
The BSC works with government, established NGOs and local leaders to identify and access the vulnerable and at risk communities. The more breweries that join, the greater our ability to confront the growing hunger.
Prior to Covid-19, our country had reached an unprecedented 29% unemployment. With lockdown in place, this number is growing exponentially, with the after effect lasting potentially many years. The result being hunger. It’s estimated that 8 million children
By repurposing the breweries to produce soup, we are creating a sustainable feeding solution, keeping jobs and the South African craft brewery industry from folding.
